Blue Eye — Syri i Kaltër
Natural Wonder

Blue Eye — Syri i Kaltër

~1 hr drive from Saranda

A mesmerizing crystal-blue spring with water so clear it glows. One of Albania's most magical natural sites.

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a natural water spring of breathtaking beauty, located near Muzinë in the Dropull municipality. The water emerges from an underground cave system at a constant temperature of 10°C, creating an otherworldly deep-blue pool that appears to glow from within.

The spring is the source of the Bistricë River and pumps out an astonishing 18,400 litres of water per second. Looking down into the centre, the water shifts from turquoise to an impossibly deep cobalt blue — the effect that gives it its name.

The surrounding area is a protected nature reserve, shaded by plane trees and lush Mediterranean vegetation. There is a small café on site, and the walk from the car park to the spring takes about 10 minutes through beautiful forest.

Visitor tips:

• Swimming in the central pool is not recommended — the current is dangerously strong

• The shallower areas around the spring are safe to paddle in

• Visit in the morning for the best light and fewer visitors

• Combined well with a stop at Gjirokastër on the same day trip
